Dolce far niente – the sweetness of doing nothing

To do nothing at all.

It can feel unfamiliar not to do anything.

As if we should fill the time.
Perform something. Be efficient.
Always on the way onward.

To just sit still, without a goal, can almost create an inner restlessness.
The thoughts begin to move faster.
The body wants to do something.

But if we stay a little longer,
without leaving,
something begins to change.

The pace drops.
The breathing becomes calmer.
What first felt empty suddenly feels… full.

There is more there than we thought.

Perhaps it is not in what we do that we find calm.
But in what we allow ourselves not to do.

Here is a simple exercise:

Sit somewhere in nature.

Put the phone away.
Do nothing in particular.

Just sit.

If the thoughts come … let them come.
If the restlessness appears … let it be there.

You do not need to change anything.
Just stay.

Give it a few minutes.
A little longer than what feels comfortable.

And notice what happens.
